Greg Shelley learning to surf at Witch's Rock Surf Camp Costa Rica

Why I Decided to Build Witch’s Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo

Tamarindo Hotel: Witch's Rock Surf Camp, Costa Rica

In January 2001 I embarked on an awesome surfing adventure, driving an old school bus from California all the way through Central America. My plan was simple: to find the perfect spot to build the perfect surf camp. There were 10 of us on that amazing trip as we explored the endless beaches and surf spots throughout Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and beyond. It wasn’t until we arrived to Tamarindo that I decided to plant my flag in the sand. Tamarindo had everything a surfer could ever need. Why did I choose to build Witch’s Rock Surf Camp ...read post

All Shook Up – Costa Rica Earthquake Experiences from Witch’s Rock Surf Camp

costa-rica-earthquake-report-news

I’m writing this blog post just a few hours after a big earthquake hit Costa Rica at 8:42 AM this morning. We’re learning as much as we can about injuries, damage, and reports of at least three deaths in the surrounding area. This post will be outdated as soon it is posted, as the reports will continue to come ...read post

Green Alert Issued for Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast: Aug. 30 – Sept. 2

A new swell just hit Tamarindo! As of this morning (Friday August 31t), the waves here in Tamarindo increased to the overhead range, and spots more exposed to the south swell should be seeing even bigger waves. Here is yesterday’s Tico Time’s article regarding the Green Alert that was just issued for the Pacific coast of Costa Rica: “The National Emergency Commission (CNE) on Thursday issued a “Green Alert” (preventive) for the entire Pacific coast of Costa Rica, due to the arrival of high waves this weekend. A report from the University of Costa Rica’s Ocean Sciences and Limnology Research ...read post

Costa Rica Is A Legitimate Big-Wave Destination: Photos Of This Week’s Giant Swell

Álvaro Solano surfing El Silencio Costa Rica surf break

Every once in a while mother nature speaks up and shows us who is in charge. This week the Pacific Ocean came roaring to life when a giant storm deep in the southern hemisphere sent shockwaves up along the Pacific coast of South and Central America. This has definitely been one of the biggest swells of the year. Even though Tamarindo is quite sheltered from big south swells (good news for our Surf School program), there were giant waves breaking at nearby surf spots, especially the outer reefs. Enjoy this collection of big wave photos taken from last Sunday through ...read post

Surfing is one of those special things in life that grabs ahold of you and turns your world upside down.
