Preparing for your Surf Trip to Costa Rica: Where to Start?

July 12, 2013

Your trip to Witch’s Rock Surf Camp is already booked or you are thinking about booking it. You’re serious about getting into surfing and ready for that first session. I won’t lie to you surfing is harder then it looks. You will be using muscles that you never used before and the better you prepare the more fun you will have. To get the most out of your surf trip to Costa Rica, make sure you take some time to prepare for it.

There are a few things you can do to make your first step into surfing much easier. This blog is not only going out for beginners but serves for intermediate and advanced surfers that don’t hit the waves that often.

Surfing is strength; endurance, power, flexibility, balance, stability and I could go on and on. You might already felt like you have been paddling so much for a wave that your arm feel like jelly and then when it’s time to push up to stand up you feel like you are struggling because you don’t have enough strength left. You will have a better experience if you work on each of those. You can do simple exercises at the gym or even at home! The more preparation you do, the better you will feel in the water.

To increase your paddle fitness you need to increase your overall surf condition. You can start improving with interval workouts instead of a long run. You will need muscle endurance in your arms, your back and shoulders. This will not only help you to paddle but also to pop up fast. Adding weights to your work out might be a good idea.

Improve your core stability and strength, “First of all you need to be working on your core stability, which is using your core muscles to stabilize your torso when there are other forces acting against you” -Clayton Beatty (Exercise scientist). I will suggest you doing bridge or plank exercises.

Practice swimming! The movements that you make while swimming freestyle are pretty much the same as the paddling motion that you make while surfing. So it will help those muscles to get into shape! It will also help you feel more confident in the ocean, if you are not a very good swimmer.

Yoga is another great idea! Flexibility is very important in surfing. A short yoga routine into your daily schedule is a quick and easy way to improve balance and flexibility.

Come surf with a friend! Surfing is much more fun when you do it with a friend. It should be a friend of your level, if you go with someone more advanced, you might give up. It will be more fun surfing with someone else that has never tried surfing before or is just getting the flow at it. You won’t feel discouraged, that person will cheer you on, support you and look out to you and you will do the same to them!

Now what are you waiting for? Book your trip if you haven’t and if you have it’s time to get ready for the most fun you will ever have!
