When the film debuted in 1964 it launched the modern surf and travel era and lured millions of people to ride waves around the world. Robert helped put Costa Rica on the global surf map back in the early 90’s when he and Bruce Brown filmed Witch’s Rock, Ollie’s Point, and Tamarindo for their sequel movie, The Endless Summer II. At that time, Robert built a house in Tamarindo and has been a regular surfer in Costa Rica for twenty years. In 2011, he moved here full time with his young daughter, and became a key member of the Witch’s Rock Family, teaching seminars on the History of Surfing, and holding surfboard shaping seminars here on the beach in our little shaping and glassing facility. Now relocated to his original home in Southern California, Robert frequently returns to Tamarindo to visit his second family here at Witch’s Rock Surf Camp. There are a few closeouts to deal with, but you can always pick off some lined-up waves and rides up to 100 meters with a much smaller crowd. The same outside rocks that cross up the waves at the main peak will send an offshooting wedge through the line up at Las Palmeras offering the occasional A-frame peak and tube section. The wave is not as peaky as the main break; generally quick running lines. Sometimes you will catch a mushy wave out the back and it will stand up on the inside and hollow out. Many people have daydreamed of surfing the right-hand slab, but it is mostly unsurfable as there is a dry reef section that pops up mid way down the wave. The left is a little bit more popular and has been surfed by a few kamikaze locals on monster swells. Neither of the waves are perfect, but they offer plenty of raw ocean power. Witch’s Rock Surf Camp is in Tamarindo, in the province of Guanacaste, in Northwest Costa Rica, on the Pacific Ocean. The famous Witch’s Rock surf break is an advanced wave in the heavily protected Santa Rosa National Park, North of Tamarindo, near the Nicaraguan border. It takes about 2 hours to get to the surf spot from our camp in Tamarindo. There are no buildings or commercial development allowed in the National Park (a very good thing) so the best way to get to the break is by boat, which we’ve been doing year-round since 2001. Tamarindo is the vibrant little hub of surfing in Northern Costa Rica, with great waves for surfers of all abilities, over 40 different restaurants, shops, activities, spas, yoga, and easy access to the Liberia Airport (LIR) 1 hour away. What airport should I fly in to? Liberia (LIR) is the closest airport, and should always be the first choice. We offer free shuttle service on Saturdays, and it is only an hour’s drive away. If you arrive on a non-Saturday, we can pick up your whole reservation for $96. Sometimes flights into the capital city of San Jose (SJO) can often be much cheaper, so it is worth checking, and weighing your options. If you decide to fly into San Jose, there are several ways to get to Tamarindo: Regional Airlines: There are regional flights from the San Jose International Airport direct to Tamarindo on the small planes of Sansa Airlines Sansa is often the easiest, since they fly out of the San Jose International Airport. Rates average around $100 per person, each way. Shuttle Vans: We can arrange to pick you up and drop you off in San Jose with one of our vans or a partner company. Vans have the advantage of being able to pick you up day or night (the regional airlines have limited schedules) and are generally cheaper for any group over two people ($300 total cost for the shuttle each way). With that in mind, once the decision has been made to book a trip and your first deposit has been received, we stand firmly by our cancellation policy. We only have 20 rooms, so canceling a trip last-minute impacts us greatly. Just as important is the fact that once a surf package/room is booked, that surf spot becomes unavailable for someone who would have booked otherwise. Please note that a cancellation by our definition is canceling the reservation completely, the need to reschedule the dates of stay, moving dates slightly and/or taking out surf packages.   No partial refunds or credits will be given for unused services such as hotel rooms, surf lessons or trips.
