This November, Waves Costa Rica and TIDE Academy prepare to unveil the new Circuito Guanacasteco de Surf (CGS) – a new program aimed at promoting surfing as a sport among youth in Guanacaste. The CGS seeks to promote Guanacaste as a surf destination, helping the region to achieve national and international recognition among the global surfing community. Organized by local schools and educational organizations, the CGS is designed to promote youth surfing in Guanacaste. In order to compete, participants must be enrolled in an educational program, thus motivating children to stay in school and away from the streets.
The first CGS competition, sponsored by Witch’s Rock Surf Camp, will be held in Tamarindo on the weekend of November 16 and 17. Full competition dates are as follows:
Tamarindo – November 16/17
Tamarindo – December 7/8
Avellanas – January 18/19
Marbella – February 8/9
Tamarindo – March 8/9
Tamarindo – April 12/13
Playa Negra – May 10/11
Surfers can compete in the following categories: Men (Open Men, Junior, Boys); Women (Open Female, Junior, Girls) and three mixed categories: Mixed Groms (up to age 12); Pushed Dolphins and School Tagteam.
The School Tagteam category is a unique aspect of the CGS where local private and public schools can form mixed relay teams to compete in a healthy environment. The winning team will represent one school, thus promoting school spirit and extracurricular sporting competition.
Designed to promote education and healthy after-school activities, the CGS will create two scholarships for low-income children through entrance fees and sponsorship support. In addition, the CGS will help attract more tourists to the Guanacaste area each year, benefiting the local economy and community.
Each event is sponsored by a different local businesses with two main CGS sponsors – Creatures and Reserva Conchal. The Circuito would like to thank everyone who has come together to make the CGS a reality.
