Don’t get me wrong, we love those off-season North West Monsters as well, but if you’re a wave-rider that enjoys everyday consistency, slack winds, thinner crowds, and cloud-filled psychedelic sunsets, then get stoked! Because South Swell Season has arrived.
In a nutshell, the angry winter months of the year produce the biggest waves. Hawaii receives their XXL swell events exclusively during the Northern Hemisphere winter (Nov- Feb) as the Southern Hemisphere receives the majority of their waves during April – September. And with Costa Rica’s ideal geographic location conveniently near the equator, our beaches get a nice taste from both Hemispheres.
So here we are today, halfway through March and still enjoying the late-season remnants from the North while the Southern Hemisphere is hiccuping with new life. Persistent strings of moderate-sized combo swells are met with offshore winds and flawless conditions. Some classic sessions for sure! But as storm activity slows down in the North Pacific, the South Pacific is once again gaining momentum and forecasted to spin out some hefty purple blobs that will trickle in by next week….
According to Surfline.com’s official forecast, “we could see a couple pretty solid Southern hemi swells to close out March as the South Pacific is due to really flare up this week. New SSW-South swell (200°-180°) lines up for the 24th-26th, which could be followed up by a tropically influenced SSW swell (220°-200°) over the 26th-31st.” Basically, it won’t be flat for a while….
And here’s the good news….If you too want to score some Southern Hemisphere juice, just give us a call! We’ll handle it from there. (Hint. Regular Season Rates start on April 25)
