In the winter of 2016, my company got hired to build a Brewery in San Jose. I personally took the job, in order to see the beautiful country and to learn to surf. I did research and decided to visit Witch’s Rock Surf Camp, partly because of the brewery, and partly because of their emphasis and focus on surfing instruction.
I’m so glad I did. It is not only just a surf camp, but a world class brewery as well… my kind of place. As a single traveler, it was a perfect setup for me to learn how to surf and to meet new people. The surf instructors and camp staff are incredible. My experience was so fantastic that I decided to commit to coming one week a month, throughout the entire winter to improve on my surfing. No matter the surf conditions, management and surf instructors are able to find the very best spot for the day. Witch’s Rock employees have been so great and have become good personal friends. In the past two years I have made friends with other fellow surfers and still stay in contact with 100s of them. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing surf vacation or someplace to go out and party like a rock star, this is the place to be!
I loved it so much that I brought my two daughters and their friends with me for spring break last year. They are 17 and 14 and were beginner surfers. They were a little timid at first, but by the end of the week there were hooked for life!! With the help of the front desk and surf instructors everyone worked so hard to make sure they had the most incredible experience possible. That is the type of staff that Witch’s Rock employs! With my girls now being big travelers there is no contemplating on where they want to go on vacation….It’s Witch’s Rock!!!
Coming up with my most memorable experience is a tough one because there are so many, but I would say it was the first time going to a surf spot, a 2-hour drive south of Tamarindo with Paco (I would tell you the name of it but its top secret!!! Haha.) Large waves, perfect swell, and consistent lefts with no other surfers but us. And to top it off I got my first barrel wave!!! If I never surfed again, I would be happy after that day. It’s something I’ll never forget.
Recommendations for first timers: communicate with the front desk! That is the most important start of a great trip. Also, go to as many classes and clinics as possible, and learn. That will make your trip so much better. I would also recommend introducing yourself to the surf cage guys, Maxi and Diego. They will make sure your surfboards are ready when you are!
No matter if you’re a beginner, intermediate or a wave thrasher; surfer or partier, Witch’s Rock has something for you. I promise!!!
